Prepping for Tuna
Murphy Sportfishing
As you know from our last newsletter we are super excited about providing you with Tuna Fishing options this summer. Substantial efforts are being made to rig out several of our boats destined for this offshore adventure.
The tackle that we use for Albacore tuna is pretty straight forward. It consists of a 6 inch skirt on weighted head, that is bounced on the surface behind a splashing wooden bird. The rig is trolled 30 to a 100 feet behind the boat at a speed of 6-7 knots. The picture above represents about $3000 worth of tuna tackle, which is just the beginning of our collection. There are hundreds of different combinations of birds and lures that work for tuna depending on dark or bright days.
Technique - We troll with a blue water rod and reel (Shimano Talica 16). We will also use hand lines, so you can load up on the quantity to make this big run worth your while. Removable aluminum Outriggers have been added to "The Maverick" which is David's boat.
We are only offering the combination Tuna & Salmon/Halibut trips at the end of August. This has been consistently good tuna time for the past three years. The trip with remaining spaces is Aug 28 - Sept 1 (5 day trip). The other trip of Aug 23-27 sold out within a few short days of announcing the dates in our previous newsletter.
