Salmon Egg Incubation
Westview Marina & Lodge
First let us thank you for your continued support to enhance Chinook and Coho Salmon stocks on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Specifically in Nootka Sound, Esperanza and Zeballos Inlets.
Support came in many forms this year in the way of dollars through our Corporate Sponsor Board, derby prizes for contestants, live and silent auction items, derby entrance fees, our annual BBQ Contest and volunteer time and energy to make it all happen. We raised a total of $35,693.28 - an all time high. Over the past 12 years we have raised over $220,000 for salmon enhancement.
It's all about the fish ...
Volunteers, both local and out-of-towners, have worked tirelessly over the past month to gather brood stocks for rivers and streams of our region. “They have been very successful”.
Working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, several volunteer groups in our area have gathered and put into incubation over 5 million fertilized Chinook Salmon eggs. This will result in an estimated 4 million smolt fry being released in the spring of 2016 into the following rivers: Burman, Gold, Sucwoa, Tulpana, Conuma, Zeballos, Canton, Leiner, and Tahsis.
In times of economic and ecological stress the best comes out in people and company sponsors, by donating their time and resources to support these valuable projects.
