The good news just keeps coming!!!
The Pacific Salmon Commission released its preseason Chinook abundance for the West Coast Vancouver Island (WCVI) - All is good! Chinook abundance is up by 55% and allowable catch is up by 78%.
What does this mean to you? There will be over 200,000 Chinook headed to WCVI this summer and 100,000 of those Chinook will be coming right into Esperanza Inlet & Nootka Sound. That’s a lot of fish to catch. Sharpen your hooks and plan your fishing holiday now.
USA Salmon Migration Down the West Coast of Vancouver Island
The 1.9 million Chinook and 1.8 million Coho headed for the Columbia River and Puget Sound are already showing at the mouth of Esperanza Inlet all around Catala Island, at Rosa Harbour, Garden Point & inside Ferrer Point. By May 1st, fishing/catching will really start to heat up.
Regulation changes you are going to like:
Although the regulations are not inked by Department of Fisheries and Ocean (DFO) yet the new changes are in the final approval stages inside the DFO. The focus of these changes is to allow greater access to the 100,000 Chinook Salmon returning to Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound without negatively affecting non-enhanced Chinook runs.
- We will most likely see 1-over 77cm and 1-under 77cm retention of Chinook in most areas where we now have only under 77cm retention after July 15th.
- There will be areas re-opened to fishing that were open in 2012 but closed for 2013.
- There will be new areas closed to all fin fish fishing to protect the non-enhanced Chinook stocks.
This is a give and take process. Give (conservation) when local stock needs to be protected to ensure its survival and growth. Take (harvest) when the enhanced Chinook runs are so large that there will be plenty of fish to meet all stream and river production needs from where they spawn.
Get ready for the best salmon fishing you have ever had.
