Our fall run of chinook salmon is now in local waters. Over the last 10 days we have seen some solid waves of fish off the mouth of the Fraser and Vancouver harbour. We have totally switched gears from targeting sockeye to targeting chinook salmon in recent days. We have been focusing most of our efforts in Vancouver Harbour with the odd trip out to the T-10 marker and Sandheads. As usual in the fall, the rising tide seems to be where it's at when targeting returning fish to the Capilano and the Fraser (at Sand Heads in particular) We have had some trips we are hooking up to a dozen good chinook and some trips we are struggling for a few hook-ups, all depends on the day.
We have been running a lot of anchovies and herring in Vancouver Harbour and Glow Yamashita hoochies and anchovies off the Fraser mouth. We have been running our bait and hoochies behind our favourite Gibbs Delta Guide Series Flashers (Bon Chovy, T 10, STS, and Lemon Lime). The chinook salmon that are bound for the Capilano are heavily influenced by rainfall this time of year. If we get a lot of rain, a good portion of the fish that are holding in Vancouver harbour will be encouraged to enter the river resulting in some tough fishing. Once we get some more dry weather, more fish will stack up and hold off the mouth.
Whenever we get into a wet pattern in the fall, we tend to focus more effort on the Fraser mouth, where there are some late-running chinook, coho, and chum salmon. Last year we had some productive coho fishing off the Fraser mouth during the first few weeks of October.
Sturgeon fishing has been very good over the last 10 days and should continue to be very consistent for numbers and size well into November. The fish are actively feeding on the dying salmon in the Fraser River. Roe and salmon parts have been working well. If you are looking at doing a sturgeon trip, our jet boat is only 25 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
