Albacore Tuna are Here - Esperanza Inlet
Westview Marina & Lodge
Tuna, tuna, tuna - Yes, Albacore Tuna are here in huge numbers!
Wind, weather, water temp, chlorophyll and wave height are the elements that contribute to a safe & successful Tuna fishing trip. That is why we seldom book Tuna trips prior to the 15th of August & no later than September 15th.
Having said that, lots of Albacore have been coming to the cleaning tables in good numbers since August 8th. What is happening is boats have been fishing the Highway for Salmon & Halibut so they are near where the Tuna are already feeding. Suddenly a tide shift or a change in the wind causes the sea to lay down. Then off they go. These boats have learned to always have their Tuna gear on board if they are going to fish outside this time of year. When the opportunity presents itself go for it!
We remain very lucky that these Tuna are comparably very close to shore than they are anywhere off the BC Coast. In the Esperanza area the Albacore usually are found 17 – 22 miles off-shore, sometimes much closer.
The gear – a higher end Hali rod & reel will do the job nicely, with 80-100 braid line. Never set the drag at Hali pressure for the 1st strike. The boat is moving at 7-10 mph & the Tuna at 30 mph. That initial impact will break stuff you never thought would come apart. It’s crazy, fast & fun.
Stop by & let’s talk Tuna or come join our weekly Tuna Seminars on Thursday evening at 6pm at the Patio Marine Pub. You will learn when, where, how & what to catch these thrilling fish with john@westviewmarina.com
