Part of the amazing success the Rivers Inlet Sportsman’s Club has had these past few seasons has been due to refinements they made with their tackle, techniques and training regime. This fly-in only fishing lodge on the rugged and remote BC coast is world renowned for their trophy salmon. Now they’ve devised a way to greatly increase your odds of catching that trophy salmon of a lifetime.
For 30 years they were traditionally top-water bait (herring) fisherman. They “mooched”, slowly trolling the top 20 feet of water using light weights and light tackle and a cut-plug (head-off) herring. This worked great most of the time; however, when the sun is up and the wind and tide are pushing the fish into deeper water you just can’t get to them.
The owners of the Sportsman’s Club wanted their clients to be able to catch salmon, no matter what the time of day or the weather. They added downriggers to their fishing arsenal and after a few years they have refined this new fishing formula to great success.
When you first get into your boat the “default tackle” is two white “hoochie” fishing lures (small plastic squid or skirt). The hoochie is dangled behind a flasher that helps give the hoochie its action. With this set-up you fish along the 100 ft. depth edge where the big trophy King/Chinook salmon hold like bass. These big lazy salmon hug close to the shoreline around the structure of the ledges, edges, drop-offs, points and kelp beds. They are hiding from the current and tide trying to minimize their swimming effort to catch maximum bait fish.
At Sportsman’s Club they provide daily seminars where you will be given instruction on boat safety, navigation, conservation and various fishing techniques including the operation of the downrigger. Their basic packages are self-guided, and with a bit of training and practice you can be successful on your own. Or, if you prefer they can custom-cater your trip to be partially or fully guided.
The beauty of the Sportsman’s Club is that some of the best fishing grounds in the world are only minutes away from the lodge in the calm waters of the inlet. Access is by seaplane only and takes less than two hours on direct flights from Vancouver. All-inclusive packages run from Mid-July to Late-August.
