We’re gearing up for another great season!
That's right we are already in pre-season mode at Avid Sportfishing. 2017 will be our sixth season in operation and we know all too well how fast the fishing season approaches.
Over the past five years we've amassed a loyal following and our 90% guest return rate tells us we are on the right track. That being said there are no major changes to speak of in 2017, just more of the same great service and phenomenal fishing that our guests have come to expect.
Predictions for early Chinook are looking good again this year so we expect the season to get off to a great start as always. Our prime fishing dates are booking up fast so as the saying goes, you can either fish or cut bait - it's up to you.
Haida Gwaii's underrated early season fishing
When it comes to salmon fishing the words “early season” normally imply the time period leading up to peak season or in fisherman’s terms it means slow fishing. This may be true for some areas of the BC coast that rely on a specific run of Chinook salmon that arrive on the same week every year, like clockwork. Here on the west coast of Haida Gwaii we begin our season in mid-May with the expectation of catching Chinook in good numbers right out of the gates.
The islands west coast is one of the first land masses these fish make contact with after spending several years in the open Pacific. The first major run of Chinook through this area are heading southbound to the Columbia River system. In recent years this particular run of Chinook have shown up in big numbers resulting in some outstanding fishing to start the season. It’s not uncommon for us to experience some of our hottest fishing for Chinook in the 18 to 28 pound range in the months of May and June.
There are always a few bigger Chinook caught in this early season as well, likely destined for rivers on BC`s North and Central coast. Every year we hook and land Tyee sized Chinook in the 30 to 50 pound range in May and June.
This highly underrated salmon fishery has never received the attention it deserves and those who have had the pleasure of experiencing it wouldn`t dream of coming any other time of the season. Another upside to fishing in May/June is the great fishing for halibut, Lingcod and Yellow Eye Rockfish
