Okuma How To - Choose your gear ratio
This short video from Okuma Fishing and Tackle gives tips on how to choose your gear ratio. What gear ratio should you use and why do you need more than one? If you are trying to fine-tune your techniques, here are the 3 different recommended ratios: 6.6:1, 7.3:1 and 8.1:1.
The slow gear ratio is the 6.6:1, use this when you need to slow your reel down to drag it along the bottom. Forcing yourself to slow it down isn’t hard with this ratio, especially when fishing offshore where slowing down gives more opportunities for bites.
7.3:1 is an all-around reel, so use this if it’s all you have access to.
8.1:1 is fast, use this if you want to pick up a lot of line to get a good hook setup. When a fish bites and comes at you, you want a high gear to get them out of cover – especially in shallow water.
