Thick, uninviting, muddy water should not be overlooked when fishing as it provides the perfect hiding place for fish. Predatory fish are masters of ambush and the muddy water provides great ambush cover. The fish are protected from any threat up above and are able to jump on easy meals that come by.
This protective cover can also apply to baitfish, hiding together in the mud lines from predators. The muddy water does not subdue the fish's senses, so approach these areas carefully as noise can ruin your chances. Calmly get into position and if possible present the fly across and away from where the fish might be holding. Some of the best results for fishing on a mud line are with flies that push a lot of water, flash, or rattle.
