Nechako Sturgeon Conservation Centre. Construction of the new facility near Vanderhoof continues to progress on time and budget. The building should reach lock up stage this month, and if all goes well, the facility will start producing sturgeon in the spring of 2014.
The conservation centre is the result of collaboration between the Province, Rio Tinto Alcan, the District of Vanderhoof and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and will be owned and operated by FFSBC.
Located across the river from the only known spawning site for Nechako white sturgeon, the facility will hatch and release up to 12,000 juvenile sturgeon into the river each year – all part of an effort to rebuild the population and restore the ability of sturgeon to spawn successfully in their natural habitat. The juveniles will be tagged prior to release so their behaviour and survival can be closely monitored.
FFSBC President Don Peterson is delighted to see the long-planned conservation centre finally becoming a reality. “This program will allow younger year classes of sturgeon to be established, while researchers search for long-term solutions that will allow these remarkable fish to survive in the river on their own.”
