Sockeye Salmon
Pacific Salmon Foundation
This year was an incredible year for fishing in BC, especially for those of us lucky enough to enjoy some time in the Strait of Georgia. We saw huge numbers of Sockeye and the first wild Coho opening in 20 years! Fishing at the mouth of the Fraser reminded me of just how exciting it is to have substantial salmon fishing opportunities in our own backyard. There were many days in August and September when I could count hundreds of recreational fishing boats on the water, not to mention thousands of anglers lining the banks of the Fraser. While it took a once-in-every-four-years Sockeye run to get these masses out fishing, it was great to see nonetheless.
And 2014 marked the first in the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s five-year program called the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project . The intent of this project is to restore healthy Chinook and Coho populations in the Strait of Georgia… and ultimately lead to the sort of local fishing opportunities we saw in 2014.
With your help, we have raised 80% of our budget for this research and restoration project and we hope to raise the remaining $2 million within the next year. If you have not yet made a donation to this important cause we are hoping you will consider making one now. As an incentive, your donation will be magnified with the support of Bob Gayton, Knelson Family Foundation, Westcoaster and Peetz Fishing Reels and Tackle who have pledged to match up to $50,000 in cumulative donations made to the Pacific Salmon Foundation by December 31, 2014.
Here are three easy ways to donate:
