Fishing for Kids Tournament
The West Coast Fishing Club
Fishing For Kids Nets Big Catch and Big Cash
Holy screamin’ knucklebusters! The eighth annual Fishing for Kids tournament raised a record-breaking $1,173,000 for Canucks Autism Network (CAN), surpassing last year’s million dollar mark. A tyee-sized thank you goes out to all participants and sponsors on behalf of the West Coast Fishing Club, FFK organizers and families who will benefit from the proceeds. Both the event and the results were, as we say, far beyond our wildest expectations.
As for the competition, it was another first - a tie between the two tournament winners, Dwight Jefferson of Macquarie Private Wealth and Colin McIver of Dentons, who caught the two biggest Chinook salmon (exactly 33.8 lbs each) in the three-day event winning a cool $200,000 grand prize.
The next day, the participants returned to YVR South Terminal from the Clubhouse and North Island Lodge where Dwight and Colin received the coveted fishing trophy. Nevin Chernick of Macquarie presented the $1.173 million dollar cheque to Canucks Autism Network, received by Vancouver Canucks owner and CAN co-founder Paolo Aquilini and CAN CEO Katy Harandi.
The annual fishing tournament has now generated over $5 million for BC children’s charities since its inaugural tournament in 2005. High-profile attendees this year included Vancouver Canucks President Paolo Aquilini; GM & Alternate Governor NHL, Mike Gillis; Vice President of Hockey Operations & Assistant General Manager, Laurence Gilman; Vancouver Canucks player Dale Weise; LA Kings, past Vancouver Canuck Willie Mitchell, and Ledcor’s President, Special Projects, Scott Lyons, along with a host of the province’s business and community leaders.
The Fishing for Kids Tournament has come to be recognized as the premier fishing tournament in the Pacific Northwest and is made possible thanks to the generous support of its sponsors, including Macquarie, The West Coast Fishing Club, Vancouver Canucks, Ledcor Group of Companies, Helijet, Aria Resort & Casino, The Province and Vancouver Sun, Helly Hansen and Delta Group. Leading BC companies from a range of industries share a common goal to raise much-needed funds for families and children living with autism in BC.
Once more, thank you all. Let’s do it again in 2014!
Speaking of 2014...
Not surprisingly, the spectacular fishing and weather of the 2013 season has resulted in an inordinately high number of next-season bookings. Already some of the prime-time trips in 2014 are at capacity, and even some of the June dates are filling up in the wake of the incredible early season fishing we saw this year. This is just one good reason to consider securing your trip-dates for 2014 as soon as possible.
And if you’ve reached that point where unique experiences with friends and family mean more than material possessions, perhaps consider a Christmas, birthday or anniversary gift in the form of a 2014 trip for you and yours to The Clubhouse, Outpost or North Island Lodge.
