January 2014 Salmon & Halibut Catch
Reel Obsession Sport Fishing
Happy New Year to all! I hope everyone has a healthy and prosperous 2014! Last time I sent out a letter I was trying to build up our social presence online and many of you have done a great job "liking" us on Facebook. I think we have received over 200 new likes in the past month, WOW! We have had a number of new followers on Twitter and got a few reviews on TripAdvisor. The contest is still ongoing, and I will do the draw at the end of the month for a $500 Reel Obsession gift certificate for anyone who has liked, followed, or done a review. I would love to see some more reviews on Trip Advisor, so if you have a few minutes please take the time and help the cause.
Winter salmon fishing around Victoria has been some of the best we have seen in years. Some very nice size fish in the high teens have been caught. The Victoria waterfront has been one of the best spots. Fish are being caught right inside the mouth of the harbour in 50-90 feet of water. Seals have been a bit of a problem, but not as bad as we have seen in the past. Squirts and small spoons have been the best lures, matching the size of the small herring that the Salmon are feeding on at this time. Whirl Bay has been another hot spot with double hook ups at times. Dragging the bottom in 110-140 feet of water has seen the most action.
We are now booking Halibut trips for this coming spring. We only have proper Halibut tides on certain days, so get your days booked early so you won't be disappointed. The rumor is we might even open for halibut February first to finish up on un-caught quota left from the 2013 season. The Pacific Halibut Commission is holding their annual meeting on January 16. At this meeting they will determine the TAC or Total Allowable Catch by the sport fishing sector for the upcoming licence period. From what we have heard it looks like we can expect a halibut season much like the previous one.
At this time I am in the process of adding a new boat to the fleet for the lodge in Zeballos. I am just starting to look around, so I will keep everyone posted on this new vessel. Now's the time to get your spot booked for one of our exciting fishing adventures. There are very few places on the coast that have the consistent salmon and bottom fishing that we enjoy all summer long. 2013 turned out to be exceptional and the salmon outlook for this year looks great as well. Don't miss out on the fun, filling the freezer, and enjoying this exceptional resource we have!
