Reel Obsession Sport Fishing
It certainly feels like a new fishing season is upon us here on the Island. We are having some beautiful weather and good fishing to go along with it! Halibut fishing has been open since February 1st, and until the new license comes out on April 1st we are allowed 2 fish a day. The size limits are still in place with one fish up to 133cm, and one up to 90cm. This size regulation will be the same for the new license year, but we will be back to the one fish a day, 2 in possession rule like the previous years. We have not been meeting the full quota the last couple years, so there is a chance we will see an in-season change to the daily limit again. Around Victoria halibut fishing has started off great, and only gets better in the next couple months. If you’re looking to get an early jump on some great action and table fare, come try a day or 2 around the capitol, you won’t be disappointed!
From everything we have seen and heard over the winter, we should expect some good returns of Chinook along the west coast again this season. Last year we had some incredible fishing all season long. The beach fishing at Ferrer Point proved once again why it can produce more sport caught spring salmon than any other single point along the coast. The winter fishing around Victoria has been very consistent, with a good size average for winter fish. The next month we should start to see a few mature larger fish coming through Juan De Fuca Straight.
I’m looking forward to another great year at the lodge. In addition I have purchased another boat for the Zeballos fishery. It is a 24 foot Donzi with twin 140’s. It has the large 9 foot beam and huge deck for fishing, making this a great addition to the fleet. The lodge will open on June 10th with almost all staff from last year returning.
I have a couple of spots to fill the last part of the month. If you’re interested in getting in on a discounted trip, this is the time. Give me a call and I can let you know details of the deal to fill these spots. The rest of the season is filling up nicely; there are a few scattered spots throughout, so book now so you are not disappointed. Our late season tuna trips are gaining popularity. With good success last season and the closer proximity we have compared to most other tuna fisheries on the island drop me a line if this is something you are interested in. August 20th on until the end of the season I will be offering these trips, based on weather and water temperatures.
