Chinook fishing is still on fire off Nanaimo. Big eye spoons continue to work very well, in all colours. The double glow needle fish hootchie from Jughead Shaker is also working well. The chinook seem to be scattered all over the map, some in tight in shallow water, some over 500 feet, the rest over 1000 feet. Best depths on the down-rigger seem to be 130-190, with consistent action throughout the day.
Commercial prawn season on the East Coast of Vancouver Island is now in full swing as of May 10th. I've noticed a huge decline in numbers of prawns caught already. I was out May 8 and caught 265 prawns. On May 10 & 13 only 50 and 80. If you do decide to set your traps, be mindful of the commercial prawn fishermen and stay clear of their gear. Yum Yum bait and pellets seem to be a good choice for targeting prawns.
