Fishing on the Vedder River
Fishing on the Vedder River
Fred's Custom Tackle
The river has been bumping up and down over the past week and fish are getting caught on the drop. The river is fishable at the moment but changes often, so stay tuned for details. Keep in mind the Wally Hall Steelhead derby started on Dec 1st, and fish are to be weighed in at the Abbotsford store location, with all proceeds from the derby going to the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition.
With the current water conditions, try fishing something with some colour such as a 4 in pink worm, a bright roe bag or shrimp. Another good option is swinging a spoon, a 2/3 brass/silver combo can often get a fish to bite. Make sure to move around and try several different baits or lures.
The conditions will change daily with temperature and rainfall. The clarity or visibility will depend on the weather and the stability of the clay banks that can create issues with clay and silt coming into the main stream throughout the watershed. Generally the cold dry weather tightens the banks and the warm rain is the problem. Anglers have adjusted the methods of fishing in all conditions, but you do need some visibility to catch fish. Six inches is minimal and 2-3 feet is good. Fresh fish are arriving daily and moving through the system to the area where they will reproduce.
Please be aware of the regulations and how to identify your fish. Release all non-retention species properly. Do not take them out of the water. A single barbless hook is very easy to remove. Stay within your limit.
