Indicators show the 2014 salmon outlook is likely to be even better than last year!
Various sources of fishery biodata fuel the Kyuquot Fishery forecast. Since this fishery is largely dependent upon highly mixed migrating Chinook stocks, the Canadian component at times can be a very small representation of the actual fish present. Therefore, we look to the south of us to see what the Columbia and neighboring rivers are expecting in terms of their returns. Focus on some key indicators and combine all this information and we have our custom Kyuquot Salmon Forecast!
Columbia River Fishery managers say the 2014 fall return will be similar to the 2013 forecast of 555,400, and last summer's run ended up being nearly twice as large (1.2 million) and it included the second highest jack return since 1985. The 2014 upriver Spring return forecast is also expected to be in the top five of the last 25 years.
These spectacular forecasts combined with projected improvements to the West Coast Vancouver Island Hatchery returns, which are expected to be greater than last year, means we are in for an amazing season-long fishery.
