By Perry Mack
Visit this seaside town built for outdoor lovers and travelers of all descriptions. Destination boaters will discover easy moorage and access to the town at the Oak Harbor Marina. From there, many of the top attractions and activities are within walking or cycling distance.
The Whidbey Playhouse is a great small community theatre with live productions on Midway Blvd. If you’ve got kids with you, stop at Flintstone Park where the kids can climb around on the replica Flintstone car, and you get some peace while enjoying the view of the harbour. Friendly volunteers will excite naval history buffs with tales and tours at the PBY Naval Air Museum. Navy aviation artifacts and memorabilia, including a fully restored PBY bring Whidbey Islands history to life. The ‘PB’ stands for ‘Patrol Bomber’ and the ‘Y’ for the manufacturer –in this case – Consolidated aircraft. Canadian company, Vickers, emulated the design and it was called the PBV.
Your stroll down to the PBY Naval Air Museum will take you along SE Pioneer Way where you can do some shopping in historic downtown Oak Harbor. Stop in at the Wind and Tide Bookshop for an eclectic mix of books where everyone can indulge in their interests.
Oak Harbor has several signature events you can enjoy. The ‘Holland Happening’ celebrates all things Dutch as many immigrants from the Netherlands landed on Whidbey Island in the 1860’s. The event includes exhibits of Dutch trade wares, a parade, entertainment, and a street fair. The Oak Harbor Music Festival showcases 30 bands on 2 stages in historic downtown Oak Harbor to raise funds for local charities, and a have a good time - stop at the beer gardens, fill your belly from the food vendors, and peruse the arts and crafts from local vendors as you absorb the music floating on the late summer breezes.
Oak Harbor Marina is conveniently located between Seattle and the San Juan Islands. The marina has 420 slips, ample guest moorage, limited side-tie moorage and 96 dry storage sheds. This marina strives to provide one of the best visits a boater could want with showers, restrooms, laundry room, ice machine, picnic tables in the park and on the guest dock. You will not likely find a better price than right here for guest moorage and they always offer the 20 cent discount on fuel for guests.
