Story & photos by Perry Mack
Today’s electronics can do so much, except withstand moisture and impacts. For those of us who work and play outdoors, our devices need protection. The Lifedge Waterproof Case for iPad is that piece of protection.
The fully enclosed watertight case is rated at IP68, which means total submersion for an indefinite period. Lifedge does specify that it is only to one metre, and this is true, as once I went below that, I did get some moisture inside. Not enough to wreck the iPad but enough to know that I can’t going diving and use it as an underwater camera.
The screen is abrasion resistant but we would have liked to see an anti-glare coating. The iPads touch screen and buttons remain wonderfully functional, however the touchscreen doesn’t respond underwater – once again, you can’t use it as a dive camera.
But this isn’t the cases’ purpose. What it is does provide is a fully functional protective case for the outdoors - in the rain, on a boat, or anywhere your use will expose the device to the elements. The rubber hand strap on the back is excellent, even when your hands are wet, making your iPad easy to use and less likely to be dropped. It also comes with an innovative stand which functions remarkably well.
The case tested works for iPad2, 3rd and 4th gen iPads. You may not love the colour tested, but it does make the iPad easy to spot should it end up in murky water or mud. The case is an excellent choice when using your iPad for work and play outdoors.
Lifedge Surface Mount kit
It can often make more sense to mount your iPad instead of carry it. I recently reviewed an action sports camera that came with a waterproof case and a terrific clamp-on helmet mount. Unfortunately you couldn’t use them together. The Lifedge surface mount kit securely friction fits onto the Lifedge case, which can then be mounted to a surface with the enclosed screws, or in conjunction with the Rokk Top Plate, mounted to the Rokk adjustable rail mount.
Rokk Adjustable Rail Mount
This mount is specially constructed to withstand corrosive marine environments allowing you to secure a range of electronic devices including fish finders, chart plotters and in this case, an iPad. Using the Rokk Top Plate (sold separately), it easily mounts to the Lifedge Surface Mount Kit.
The clamp fit 25.4 to 33.7 mm (1” to 1.25”) rails even if they are curved. We positioned ours on a curved rail, and the iPad remained secure as we pushed buttons and worked the touchscreen functions. We liked the secure shock-resistant mount as we pounded over the waves, and as engine vibration sought to shake it loose.
The single knob locking mechanism allowed for simple and quick repositioning, however if we had to find one fault, it’s that it’s slippery when adjusting with wet hands.
The Rokk Adjustable Rail Mount is the perfect accessory to confidently secure your marine electronics. Scanstrut produces a host of installation solutions for marine electronics.
