Garmin International this year has introduced an array of new electronics, including sonar, radar and multifunction displays, as well as wearable accessories.
In the last few months, Garmin introduced seven major products, including the new Fantom solid-state radar, its largest multi-function display (the GPSMAP 84/8600), a marine GPS smartwatch and an in-view sunglasses attachment for streaming boat performance and other data.
Garmin is demonstrating the products at a three-day media event in Miami that started Tuesday. The equipment is installed on four center consoles: 25- and a 39-foot Contenders, a 42-foot Invincible and a 38-foot Jupiter. The boats are based at Sea Isle Marina at the Marriott Biscayne Bay.
“An event like this lets us tell, and demonstrate to the media exactly what we have in a relaxed, slow-paced atmosphere so the products can really be understood,” Garmin senior manager of marine sales and marketing David Dunn told Trade Only Today.
Dunn said Garmin gave no demos at the Miami International Boat Show in February because it did not know what to expect at the new venue on Virginia Key. “We were unsure about how Miami would work, so we did not want to invest a lot of time setting up demos,” he said. “We were unsure about water access, boat traffic, parking.”
Dunn briefed journalists on the products before hitting the water on Tuesday.
– The GPSMAP 84/8600 glass helm MFDs (17-, 22- and 24-inch) are equipped with faster processors and have the highest resolution of any MFD on the market, according to Garmin. $7,399-$11,999USD
– The 40-watt GMR Fantom (4- and 6-foot open array) solid-state Doppler radar features MotionScope instant moving target detection, pulse compression for high resolution, and close- and long-range detection from about 20 feet to 72 nautical miles. $6,999-$7,499USD
– The GHP Compact Reactor autopilot is targeted for single-outboard boats under 30 feet. The system minimizes heading error, course deviation, rudder movement and power consumption, according to Garmin. $1,099-$1,999USD
– BlueChart g2 HD accessory cards and downloads now include up to 1-foot high-definition fishing contours for greater bottom detail. BlueChart g2 Vision HD includes a feature that guides users in and out of ports and marinas.
– The PS21-TM Panoptix Forward transom-mounted transducer features FrontVu for collision avoidance and shows real-time obstructions with a 300-foot range. It will be available in the second quarter of this year. $999USD
– Garmin’s quatix 3 GPS marine smartwatch streams NMEA 2000 data — such as boat speed, water temperature and depth, and wind data – from compatible on-board Garmin electronics. The quatix 3 is loaded with multisport functions for golf, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing, swimming, hiking, skiing and running. It is sunlight readable and water-rated to 100 meters. $599USD
– The Garmin Nautix is an in-view sunglasses attachment that streams performance, navigational and environmental data. It attaches to most sunglasses and shows speed, heading, water depth and temperature, wind direction, engine RPM and other data. $399USD
