Soundings.
FLIR Systems recently unveiled the Ocean Scout TK, its newest thermal vision monocular, which is retailing for a fraction of the price of its predecessors.
The Ocean Scout TK is the smallest in the Ocean Scout Series, and its $599 price is dramatically less than the models that previously started at $2,000. This model does not have the range of its pricier predecessors, but will be accessible to more boaters, the company said.
“What’s good about it is you can start having thermal imaging on your boat at reasonable pricing,” FLIR Maritime general manager Gregoire Outters said.
The technology inside the Ocean Scout TK creates high-contrast images using heat, rather than visible light, revealing the differences in temperature and heat emitted by boats, buoys and landmarks — and people overboard — in total darkness.
“The ability to see in complete darkness with thermal vision gives boaters greater confidence while fishing, sailing or cruising at night,” Outters said.

The unit is designed for one-handed use and is resistant to rain, wind and even being dropped into shallow water. The unit can store as many as 1,000 JPG images and four hours of video. The internal battery is rechargeable.
