Homolovi State Park partnered with the Old Trails Museum to host special tours of Homolovi II, the largest of the ancient Hopi villages located at Homolovi State Park.
These special tours were part of Winslow's tour stop for the Smithsonian's Journey Series traveling exhibition, hosted by the Old Trails Museum at La Posada Hotel. The exhibition showed how the evolving mobility changed a young US nation and how transportation made it grow. The accounts of travelers themselves express the hopes and promises of fresh starts, the grim realities of forced migrations and difficult journeys, and the thrills of personal travel.
Journey Stories is part of Museum on Main Street, collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. The exhibit will travel around Arizona to the communities of Springerville (Casa Malpais) August 10 to September 22, 2013, Kingman (Kingman Powerhouse Visitors Center Mohave Museum of History and Arts) September 28 to November 10, 2013, Florence (McFarland State Historic Park) November 16 to December 29, 2013, Patagonia (Patagonia Public Library) January 4 to February 16, 2014 and Sierra Vista (Henry F. Hauser Museum) February 22 to April 6, 2014. For information on all local Journeys to Winslow companion exhibits and programs, go to www.oldtrailsmuseum.org or the Arizona Humanities Council website at www.azhumanities.org. The Arizona Humanities Council made Journey Stories possible in Winslow and support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
Homolovi, one of a series of many ancient Hopi pueblos found in the Southwest, offers the public the opportunity to begin their journey into Hopi life and culture. Like the modern visitor making their way to Hopi, Homolovi was a stop for the ancestral Hopi people along their migration route, eventually moving on and settling at one of the current Hopi villages.
