Story & photos By Sylvia Hermans
West Kelowna residents and visitors alike await another free, fun, family event June 27 to July 1 at Memorial Park adjacent to the Johnson Bentley Pool.
Traditionally the Westside Celebration Society, which exists of a passionate group of volunteers, works year-round to get everything in place for this multi day event that attracts thousands of people to the Westside of Lake Okanagan.
Westside Daze kicks off on Saturday with a judged parade, one of the largest in the BC Interior, a kids fair presenting games, face painters, a maze craze, climbing wall, crawl zone, a dunk tank, the Sunshine Pet Supplies Central Okanagan dog agility demonstration and the Fenders CARdboard roadster building contest. Come early with your kids 10 & under, as this was a very popular event last year!
Youth 13 to 21 who are passionate singers, musicians, hip-hoppers or magicians are encouraged to register for our Youth Talent Contest from 1-4 pm on the main stage. The winner will be entered as a finalist into the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) on the Labour Day Weekend in Armstrong, BC.
After an evening of music under the stars our first day will close with spectacular fireworks-on–the-lake.
The second day starts with a pancake breakfast and community gospel celebration with pastor Don Richmond and professional vocalist Barb Samuel. In the afternoon the Westbank First Nation will showcase their heritage with traditional performances and demonstrations. Another concert will bring an end to this fun filled day around 10pm.
For the following 3 days Westside Daze will continue to bring its highly anticipated concert series from 7 to 10 pm. Just bring a lawn chair and a blanket - as the evenings can be chilly - and come enjoy these free concerts in the park.
