Yucatan Peninsula
The Yucatán Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico, separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico. Yucatecan food is its own unique style and is very different from what most people would consider "Mexican" food. It includes influences from the local Mayan culture, as well as Caribbean, Mexican, European (Spanish), African, and Middle Eastern cultures.
The Yucatán Peninsula comprises a significant proportion of the ancient Maya Lowlands and there are many Maya archaeological sites throughout the
peninsula; some of the better-known are Chichen Itza, Tulum and Uxmal.
