The Land Remembers….
How often have you looked at the mountains, rivers and forests around you and asked yourself,” I wonder what this land was like a thousand years ago? , “I wonder how life was for the First People in this area” or “How did Early Man survive in this beautiful, rugged land”? Well, the land remembers…
Tuckkwiowhum (pronounced tuck-wee-ohm) Heritage Interpretive Village is the original site where Fraser Canyon legends were born. Archaeological evidence shows this area being inhabited by First Nations as early as 5000 years ago, but the legends go back even farther; to a time when Coyote walked in a buckskin tunic and the Three Brothers shaped the rivers and valleys.
Tuckkwiowhum Village (Tuckkwiowhum means good berry picking place in the Nlaka'pamux language) is a historically accurate recreation of an Nlaka'pamux settlement as it would have been over two hundred years ago. Erected on the original village site are cedar bark summer lodges, earthen root ovens, a fish oil pit, pictographs, an awe-inspiring pit house and other traditional structures. Enjoy an historical adventure that will evoke deep memories of the old ways. Just like thousands of years ago, a local guide will walk you through the settlement explaining how life was for the first people who lived and thrived in the rugged mountainous Fraser Canyon. We will invite you into our pit house to visit one of our respected storytellers. Rest a while on fragrant pine boughs and enjoy one of our traditional stories. This is your opportunity to explore our village enjoy the beautiful landscape and share in sacred memories of our Nlaka’pamux culture. Yes, the land remembers, and it is waiting to tell you of our past.
