Rallies are a big part of RV clubs, allowing you to experience new destinations.
Words by Jessica Rider
During a visit to Elkhart, IN, for a business meeting this past August, one of the largest rallies of the year in the area was taking place. The event had a unique name and showcased RV vendors, seminars, entertainment, displays, swap meet/garage sales, and more for a full week. I am referring to the Forest River Owners Group Rally (FROG) for owners of Forest River RVs.
Experiencing all of the buzz around the community had me wondering about the numerous RV clubs and groups that are available to join. I kept asking myself ‘what are their benefits? and why would RVers join one?’ I was initially thinking that they could provide camaraderie and enjoyment through organized rallies and trips. However, after some research, I learned they can also offer value and cost savings, in addition to added excitement on the road.

Meeting new, exciting people and sharing stories always enhance a trip.
From manufacturer-specific owners clubs - like those organized by Airstream, Winnebago, Forest River, Leisure Travel Vans and the series of Thor brands - to groups such as the Canada-based Explorer RV Club, I learned they are not all the same. However, they share similar highlights including the hosting of annual or seasonal rallies, special incentives and some even have provincial or state chapters to serve particular regions.
If joining an RV club sounds appealing, start by researching for one in your area (or for the brand of RV you own) and then determine its benefits. Once you join one, you’ll realize a host of incentives including:
- Direct Access to the Manufacturer
I am not saying you will have the owner of an RV company available on speed dial, but some owner clubs (especially those organized by manufacturers) provide direct access to parts and other suppliers at annual or seasonal rallies throughout the year. This is something you would not normally have access to if you weren’t part of the group. Plant tours and other special incentives may also be available.

Of course, activities are always enjoyed among like-minded enthusiasts.
- RV-Related Discounts
Some RV groups and/or clubs provide discounts on insurance, roadside assistance, area attractions and even private campgrounds. Other incentives may also include medical emergency programs like those offered to members of the Family Motor Coach Association or RV dealer discounts provided by the Explorer RV Club.
- Social Activities and Adventures
Many groups and clubs hold special events throughout the year (and usually a large annual rally) that are great ways to meet new people. Some events host seminars, provide opportunities to have your RV inspected by trained technicians and even sneak previews of new RVs, especially those organized by manufacturers.

Most clubs organize seasonal events as well as larger annual rallies.
- Online Connecting
Group sites such as RVillage.com provide RV owners with a way to connect with each other or even plan trips together. It consists of a community-based RV network designed to connect, share information, meet on the road, join specific groups, and inquire about RV-related topics, hobbies and activities. It’s a great online resource to enhance the RV lifestyle.
Overall, just connecting with others that have the same RV or interests can make travelling much more exciting. My family and I have certainly met other enthusiasts in campgrounds. Joining a club or group can be extremely beneficial, whether you’re new to RVing or just want to find other ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Happy Camping!
