map of northern british columbia
The sprawling and often rugged expanse
...of Northern British Columbia comprises more than half of the entire province: roughly 500,000km sq/193,051mi sq; an area larger than California or Japan and two times as large as the United Kingdom.
Northern BC reaches 1,000km/621mi from east to west, and follows the legendary and historic Yellowhead Highway. It is framed by jagged mountain peaks, roaring rivers, lush valleys, ragged coastlines and ancient island archipelagos.
The mountain ranges, which dominate the northern landscape, were shaped by volcanic fire. The valleys that lay between, carved over time by ancient glaciers...
ATTRACTIONS:
- Ray Loseth's North Country Fishing Hot Spots
When you find that you’ve had your fill (or reached your limit) in Kitimat, you’ll head another 73 km/45 miles back the way you came, to the town of Terrace. Besides the magnificent snow-topped mountain ranges that surround you, there are plenty of other ‘touristy’ things to see in this picturesque place. In addition to being known for its native arts shops, museums, galleries and, of course, its fishing, Terrace also happens to be the best place to buy yourself authentic mukluks and moccasins (I’ve been wearing the same pair since 1989!).
- Haida Gwaii Museum & Skidegate Days, Queen Charlotte Islands
Sprawled along the shores of Bearskin Bay, Queen Charlotte City looks out over the islands of Skidegate Inlet, with Sleeping Beauty Mountain rising up in the background. Several heritage buildings dating back to 1909, line the main road of Queen Charlotte City, providing interesting subjects for photographers. The Premier Hotel, the old hospital, the old schoolhouse, and the old sawmill site offer a fascinating glimpse into life in Queen Charlotte City in the early part of the twentieth century.
