A stretch of Florida’s South U.S. 441 that caters to the recreational vehicle market should soon see an increase in choices, if not outright competition.
The Ocala Star-Banner reported that an as-yet-unnamed 33-acre RV campground is scheduled for development alongside Southern Oaks RV Resort. Meanwhile, land is being cleared for a new location of RV Swapshop, a dealer of used and reconditioned RVs. The new dealership is set to go on 10 acres next to Camping World of Ocala, a dealer of new RVs.
Thomas Starkey said he and his wife, Martha, of Mount Clare, W.V., recently bought the 33-acre parcel from Novia Group LLC for $800,000. Starkey didn’t have a timetable for the opening of the new campground.
“I just have to get contractors,” he said. “I’m waiting on the engineer right now. He’s about a third through everything he needs to do. Then, the next thing in the process will be to start getting some bids on construction and then go from there.”
Starkey said he and his wife became familiar with the area after buying property in The Villages recently.
“Then I was out looking for vacant land, probably something just to roll over, you know,” he said. “And I came across this piece of property and decided to see what I can do with it.
“It had the acreage for one thing,” Starkey added. “It’s all level and usable. It’s on the highway, close to The Villages, close to the doctors and all the restaurants. Then you have the activity that’s already there. I just assumed it would be the ideal place for a campground.”
