Geocaching Map
There’s a secret adventure hiding along almost every road you rumble down in your RV. It’s an easy-to-understand high tech treasure hunt called geocaching. Geocaching is an outdoor game where you use GPS-enabled devices, like smart phones, to hunt for hidden containers called geocaches.
There’s more than 1.3 million geocaches around the world. Most geocaches contain dollar toys and other trinkets that turn the adventure into a true treasure hunt. Finders are welcome to take something from the geocache as long as they leave something of equal or greater value in its place.
Odds are you already have what it takes to get started. All you need is a sense of adventure, a GPS device or a GPS-enabled smartphone and a free Basic Membership to Geocaching.com. The Geocaching.com Applications for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7 allow RVers to easily search for and navigate to nearby geocaches, making capturing the pioneering spirit with geocaching easier than ever.
Premium Members of Geocaching.com have access to an innovative tool known as “Caches Along a Route.” Users of the tool input the starting and ending destinations of their road trip and specify the distance from the roadway that they want to search. You’re provided with a list of the geocaches hidden along your travel route.
A trip from Kelowna to Calgary takes RVers up along the Trans-Canada Highway. Adventures have their choice of nearly 400 geocaches within a half mile of either side of the roadway. One geocache called “One Second Falls” reveals a hidden waterfall that most RVers drive right past. The cache offers nearby parking, takes just 30 minutes for most people to find and offers a scenic diversion from the road.
One geocacher who recently logged the cache page wrote, “WOW, and I thought the falls we could see from the road were nice! Thanks for giving us a reason to climb up this short trail. Impressive falls.” Geocaching often leads travelers to new vistas, unexplored destinations and hidden landmarks.
It’s easy to join the five million people, including RVers, who already geocache. Premium Memberships provide a year of fun for only $30. RVers can start the adventure by searching for caches on the Geocaching.com.
