If you've been through domestic departures in the new WestJet AB Connector recently, you would have come across a peculiar play area depicting a 1950s-style trailer stuck up in a tree. This is the latest installation from renowned artist Judson Beaumont. With an extensive portfolio in collaboration with YVR, Jud was excited to create a relatable play area for the resident's of Vancouver and surrounding cities. The theme "Exploring British Columbia" sparked memories of early childhood spent in tree houses and road tripping around the province. He wanted to do a whimsical spin on an iconic vintage RV and the "Trailer in a Tree" was born.
Discussion on the project began in early 2014 and has since come a long way. The final installation was installed in the new WestJet AB Connector wing in domestic departures at the YVR Airport this past November in 2015. Equipped with a short flight of stairs up to the trailer, a slide to exit and a tunnel through the base of the tree, the play area is like walking into a life-sized cartoon. The installation is made of fibreglass, spray foam, protective plastic coating, and custom laminate. Next to the main installation is a sitting area for kids and adults alike to relax and watch their favourite cartoons. The back of the TV is outfitted with similar custom laminate as the inside of the trailer and the stools are pine beetlewood with resin tops.
