Pennsylvania camping and park activities generate more than $175 million annually, according to Jennifer Schwartz of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC).
Lancaster Online reported that as technology improves, people are still flocking to the woods, but with some noticeable differences — some are now bringing electronics into nature and some are adopting family rules to purposely avoid them.
Cathy Joerger, her husband and their three boys, ages 14, 12 and 11, will take to the great outdoors on nine different camping trips this season, something Joerger says enables the family to de-stress.
“(Camping is) good family time. It makes you talk to each other without any kind of interruption … from electronics in general,” she says. “It’s something to do, family-oriented. It makes you get out.”
It’s a booming industry in Pennsylvania and, in particular, the Lancaster area, says Schwartz, who says Pennsylvania tourism started in Lancaster County and of the 30 local campgrounds, most have been around for more than 40 years.
“The biggest draw to the area is the beautiful agrarian landscape and the Amish sect,” she says in an email. “With the increased popularity of the farm-to-table movement, the area has been booming. Farm markets dot the landscape and supply the campers with good, wholesome produce and baked goods.”
