Revelstoke Dam
The visitor centre for BC Hydro’s Revelstoke dam is open for the summer season. The public can get tours of the second largest producer of electricity in the province. In support of National Electricity Month, BC Hydro will offer ‘two-for-one’ admission every weekend in June.
The Revelstoke facility provides information on hydroelectric generation and on the history of the dam and generating station. Visitors can access a walkway at the top of the powerhouse to get a closer look at the dam. There is also an elevator that can transport guests 35 storeys up to a lookout point above the 175-metre-high dam.
The visitor centre was re-designed in 2009 and now features a First Nations gallery. The Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, the Okanagan Nation Alliance and the Ktunaxa Nation helped shape the gallery's design and determined which artifacts and artwork would be included in the displays.
The Revelstoke dam and generating station was completed in 1984, and has an installed capacity of 2,570 megawatts, which makes it the second largest power generating facility in British Columbia, after the WAC Bennett Dam in Hudson’s Hope. The facility was originally designed as a six-unit facility but only four units were built. In 2010, BC Hydro completed the installation of a new, fifth generating unit, which added about 500 megawatts of capacity.
The visitor centre at Revelstoke is one of four BC Hydro visitor centres in the province and will remain open until Sept. 2. To learn more about the centre, please visit bchydro.com/revelstoke or call 250-814-6600.
