RV shipments in January were the largest in 10 years and marked the second-best start to a year since 1973.
January’s survey of manufacturers by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association showed that RV shipments to retailers jumped 10.6 percent from the same month last year, to 31,526 units.
The RV industry has long been seen as a leading indicator of boat sales.
Powered by gains in five of the seven major vehicle categories, January wholesale shipment totals represented a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of more than 435,000 units, the highest such monthly reading since September 1999.
All towable RVs, led by conventional travel trailers, rose 10 percent in January, reaching a total of 27,248 units, which represents 86.4 percent of all RV shipments.
The total for all motor homes grew 10.6 percent, improving to 4,278 units in January, the best start for motor homes in 11 years.
