This is a pretty cool restoration, blending an all-original 1990 FJ62 with a stock 1997 FZJ80 Land Cruiser. Perhaps restoration isn’t the right word though, since it was more like gene splicing. Taking the best DNA from two species to create an enhanced hybrid.
It began with the 80 series chassis being modified to accept the FJ62 body. This approach provided 4 wheel disc brakes, coil suspension, factory front and rear locking differentials, a stiffer frame, and more precise steering while keeping it all Toyota. The brake system was enhanced with DBA rotors and stainless plumbing, Old Man Emu suspension, ProComp wheels and BFG tires.
The power plant was upgraded using a GM E-Rod 5.3L crate kit compliant with California’s stringent emissions standards with a GM 4L65E automatic transmission mated to the stock full time 4x4 two-speed transfer case.
Leaving no stone (rust flake) unturned, the chassis was powder-coated in a body-off repaint, a polyurea coating applied to the underside and floors, extensive Dynamat sound deadener and insulation applied for a luxury-quiet ride followed by Mercedes vinyl and Chilewich woven vinyl inserts. Add heated seats, high-end audio, Bluetooth and NAV, locking storage compartments, all new OEM Toyota trim and you have a serious off-road vehicle with classic style in a very modern, ‘civilized’ street machine.
