Ford reinvents the Super Duty to be tougher, smarter and more capable
When Ford launched the game changing 2015 F-150, it forced the whole industry to take notice. Massive amounts of technology, small-displacement turbo engines and of course, the all-aluminum body (that they just can’t stop hitting everyone over the head with) has changed the truck segment forever. Ford are now looking to hit the competition with a one-two punch as they pulled the covers off the next generation Super Duty, boasting all the latest thinking that made the F-150 Canada’s truck of the year.
We already heard reliable rumours that the Super Duty was going to make use of an all-aluminum body like its little brother, and that’s just what they did, cutting weight by 159 kg (350 pounds). An all-new high-strength steel frame, stronger axles, springs and suspension, all designed to increase the Super Duties towing and hauling capabilities join the new aluminum body. However, Ford has not yet released any numbers on just how capable the new chassis will be but proclaim the frame to be up to 24-times stiffer than the previous frame.
The new Super Duty will also make use of several carry-over features from the new F-150, including the BoxLink system that is a combination of metal brackets and custom cleats that can be used to secure a variety of accessories in the bed. A remote tailgate allows the tailgate to be locked/unlocked and opened with the key fob. There will also be as many as seven cameras surrounding the truck giving the driver a 360-degree view as well as several advantage view angles while navigating tight parking lots or off-road terrain. LED lighting all round with side-view mirror spotlights to illuminate work or campsites.
Inside, the Super Duty receives a complete redesign of the interior with particular attention made to the dash. This includes Ford’s latest version of the SYNC3 communications and entertainment system that features an easier-to-understand graphical interface, along with an intuitive smartphone-like 8-in touch screen.
The second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V-8 diesel engine has been given an upgrade in horsepower and torque, or choose the 6.2L V-8 gasoline engine or an option of the 6.8L V-10 gasoline engine in the chassis cab lineup.
There will be five models in the Super Duty lineup – XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum - that will go on sale late 2016.
