Story and Photos by Ryan and Ryan
Salvaged from the depths of the Northeastern Wastelands of Canada, better known as a farmer’s field in Northern Quebec, this Bronco was left for dead with no hope of salvation. One of our customers spotted this machine on a long haul route and decided to come back for it. The man came into our store and asked how long it would take to restore an early bronco. We sat down with him and hammered out the details and one week later the almost unsalvageable Bronco arrived on a trailer.
We pulled the Bronco into the shop and started to tear it down. We needed to know what we had to save, restore and/or replace. This rig had been sitting in a field for over thirteen years and was a farm truck for most of its life – translation - a great deal of work required to bring it back to life. Fortunately, we have restored many Broncos before and know our way around these machines.
Everything goes - body, motor, transmission, T-case, axles, roof, doors, and wiring. We blasted the frame and axles and rebuilt all the body mounts. The rig received all new bushings from Energy Suspension, Moog ball joints, HD U-joints and new drive shafts front and rear. The axles received 4:10 gears and all new internals with positraction.
To save on costs, our customer wanted a refresh to the OE motor. To our surprise it just required a light hone, new bearings and a head job. We updated the ignition system and distributor, along with an Edelbrock performer intake and new Edelbrock carburetor. A full gasket set, water pump, fuel pump, plugs, air filter and valve covers were also in order. We rebuilt the C4 auto/Dana 20 transfer case and added a twin stick for fun.
The body and paint were quite a challenge. All the panels were re-conditioned with metal. The Bronco needed all new hinges for the doors and tailgate. We also needed to rebuild the inner workings of the side windows. We installed custom steering and a track bar built in house, all DOM so we could ditch that old Y steering setup. The Bronco received all new brakes, master, and booster; even overflow bottle and washer fluid bottle. To spice it up a bit, we added flow tech headers full length, a 2 ½ inch exhaust and a pair of Flowmasters; those 302’s wake right up with true duals.
Our customer wasn’t looking to recreate a stock Bronco, so we installed a 4” Skyjacker lift kit and fitted it with classic white wagon wheels wrapped around some 35/12.5/15 Pro Comp M/T’s. This is a nostalgic, clean, reliable daily driver with a bit of a twist. Our customer enjoys his new toy and drives it every chance he gets.
