1. Remove the old plastic decorative ornaments (factory steps). You can probably sell these to someone who has wrecked his or hers, unless you have similarly ‘modified’ yours.

2. Put tape along the body under the door, hold up the rock slider and mark the holes on the tape, then centre punch the holes to keep the drill bit in place when you start drilling.

3. Buy a brand new bit for this or make sure yours is extremely sharp. Let the drill do the work and make sure your drill is lined up perpendicular to the body, as the Jeeps rocker panel is thin metal. This will help insure your inserts have a flush fit into a straight body panel.

4. Remove the tape. We used a paint marker to cover up the fresh metal and slow down any rust.

5. Install the nut inserts along the body. Be patient. The tool has a hex hole, which we (I) managed to strip. We MacGyver’d a new tool by finding a similar (20-20 ¼) bolt and reusing the nut portion of the tool.

6. Mount the rock slider to your rocker using the supplied rubber gasket and body side bolts. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Then you will have to drill a couple holes up from the bottom of the rocker. The instructions say ‘Be sure to pull back the carpet before drilling’. Sure the carpet – so you can pull the wiring harness out of the way! Install the long through bolts, replace the carpet (and wiring harness), step back and admire your work.

There’s something disconcerting about drilling or cutting into perfectly good, rust free metal. But that’s the job on the road to better performance and in this case, overall body longevity. The Teraflex Rock Sliders are built from ¼” T6063-T5 aluminum and sheathed in a UV resistant powder coat.
They are strong, yet light weight and as an added bonus – look great, especially if you’ve also installed the Teraflex front and rear bumpers, with their complimentary clean lines and bulletproof construction.
With the Teraflex rock sliders replacing the factory steps, we have improved the clearance between the front and rear wheels, protected the rock panel and still have a step to help get in and out of the Jeep.
The Teraflex instructions are fairly clear and easy to follow but here are a few additional tips on technique that will make your install go smoother than ours.
We are now more trail-ready than ever. Is it wrong to want to actually hit a rock to test them?
