Pro Comp made a splash in the off-road tire market with the Xterrain a number of years ago. Now the new aggressor on the block is the Xtreme M/T 2, and we were more then willing to put a set through the ringer. We did this purely for your education and took no pleasure in the beatings whatsoever… OK, maybe a little.
A good fistful of wheel weights were needed to balance the 37/12.50/17 rubber to a set of Unique 297 steel wheels when we first got them mounted. The shock was the smooth ride and low road noise we received even while going, well, let’s just say “going”. The tires felt really stable on the street, but you knew by the flex in the carcass that there was a lot of rubber on the road.
Our first run with these tires was actually in the snow. We found the M/T 2 to have better then average grip on the ice and hard pack when stacked against other MT tires. Deep snow required us to drop the pressure to 4 psi to blast through the deep stuff. Nothing exceptional, but it got the job done.
Once spring arrived, we were happy that ProComp had an open self cleaning tread design for us in the woods. This meant good traction in the mud and not picking up any stones along the way, but heavy, sticky mud needed some liberal throttle usage to keep the treads cleaned out.
What little rocks we came across required careful footing to keep form sliding. The harder rubber compound is the tradeoff for a 90,000k warranty. We didn’t have any tire chunking, and only received a few superficial wounds to the sidewalls.
So, who should own a set of ProComp Xtreme M/T 2’s? Low road noise for a mud tire, aggressive looks and a long tread lift make this a great tire if you have to split your time between work and play with one rig.
