Poison Spyder Bombshell™ Differential Covers
Dusty Sharp
Poison Spyder Customs, Inc. recently re-designed their popular Bombshell™ differential covers, which are now available for both Dana 44 and Dana 30 axles. The design of the new Bombshell™ incorporates recesses to protect the diff cover bolt heads from trail damage, while the profile of the Bombshell™ acts as a ramp to help the vehicle slide up and over the rocks. The ramp profile also results in an extremely thick—up to 1” thick—cross-section around the bolt ring, where contact with the rocks is most likely. Throughout the rest of its cross-section the Bombshell™ is the thickest cast differential cover on the market, from 7/16” to a brutal 1/2” thick at the outermost surface. The new Bombshell™ is cast from highly ductile nodular iron—the same material drag racing differential housings are cast from to handle thousands of horsepower.
“We used to share the same basic design and foundry as other diff covers on the market, but we wanted to improve the durability, function and appearance of our product while making it uniquely Poison Spyder,” said Poison Spyder’s president, Larry McRae. “So we put our engineers to work designing a brand new Bombshell™, while we also sought out a more reliable foundry for doing the castings.” The most visually striking change with the new design is the huge Spyder logo cast across the entire surface of the cover. “The Spyder is more than just cosmetic,” says McRae, “it actually functions as strengthening ribs—the material is about an 1/8” thicker there—added to the already ridiculous thickness of this cover!”
Poison Spyder Bombshells™ are available now for both Dana 30 and Dana 44, either bare or powder-coated. Each comes in a complete kit, with Grade 8 hardware, a low profile internal-hex fill plug, and silicon sealant.
