Frame the shot so the subject is in the bottom right hand 1/3 of your frame. The headlines need to be easy to read. The area for the headlines should be monotone (one colour or close to it), for instance a sky, forest lake or a cloud of dust (preferably out of focus as well).

Shooting for a cover
A cover photo is framed differently than other photos. The reason for this is that the image isn't yet complete. We need to add the magazines title at the top and headlines for the contents down the left hand side.

Make certain you are shooting with your cameras largest file size.
