Discovery Islands Salmon Farm
Georgia Strait Alliance April 2013
The provincial government announced that they will heed the parts of the "Cohen Inquiry into the Decline of the Fraser River Sockeye" report that pertain to provincial jurisdiction. This includes a commitment to not issuing any new or expanded fish farm tenures in the Discovery Island area before 2020.
In his report, Judge Cohen also suggested that if the industry could not prove conclusively by 2020 that the farms are harmless to wild salmon, they should be removed from the migration routes of the Fraser River Sockeye. Georgia Strait Alliance and our allies have long been calling for the clearing of the farms in the Discovery Islands in order to provide clear passage for out migrating juvenile Fraser River salmon. These fish are in jeopardy from disease and pathogens from the open net-cage farms they must pass on their long voyage to the ocean.

GSA featured on Victoria Foundation's Community Knowledge Centre
Victoria's Inner Harbour
We were very pleased to be among the 32 not-for-profit organizations featured at the live launch of the Victoria Foundation’s Community Knowledge Centre earlier this year. The online hub showcases the work of local charities to potential donors, other organizations, and the greater community.
GSA’s Community Knowledge Centre profile includes an overview of the organization as well as links to videos, blogs and webpages. The profile features our Clean Marine BC program, highlighting the work done in the Capital Regional District (CRD) in 2012 with the support of the Victoria Foundation.
You can learn more about this exciting initiative on GSA's blog.
