“How we engage in these processes will surely make the critical difference between the mine receiving approval or it being turned down. The time is right to send a united message of opposition, and we need your help now more than ever.”

Demanding leadership on climate change
Esso Refinery in Ioco - Earlier this month, Georgia Strait Alliance joined over 60 other leading environmental organizations, unions and other groups in calling for the provincial government and opposition to launch an open conversation about climate change during the 2013 BC election campaign.
In 2007, the BC government embarked on a major shift in direction in tackling climate change, but today all the targets and initiatives seem lost. In fact only 6 years later, climate change has fallen off the public policy radar, with the province having no plan to meet its 2020 target and with increased focus on expanding resource extraction like fracking, coal and LNG.
In signing onto this letter, we are calling on all BC political parties running in the 2013 provincial election to recommit to the targets and timelines laid out in BC's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act. And we call upon each party to table a platform that demonstrates how they will meet those targets. The window of opportunity for action on climate change is closing and we need all parties to show leadership today.

For the past three years, many citizens and groups from around the region have spoken out about the proposed Raven Coal Mine Project near Fanny Bay, BC. With the soon to be released Application/Environmental Impact Statement by Compliance Coal Corporation, the environmental assessment will enter a 180 day application review stage and culminate in the Minister's Review and final decision.
Comox Valley: Coal Watch, Water Watch Coalition and Sierra Club have teamed up to spearhead a number of actions in the coming months, and Georgia Strait Alliance is happy to support their efforts.

Good things come in small packages
Sometimes the smallest packages hold the greatest gifts. An envelope recently received at our Nanaimo office contained a hand-printed note saying: I want to help save the world and the oceans and the animals I hope the five dolers from my pigey bank is good. This heartfelt note and donation were warm reminders of why we do the work we do at GSA and who we really do it for – the children of today and future generations.
We'd like to thank this young environmentalist and the hundreds of other individuals who chose to make a donation to Georgia Strait Alliance in 2012, helping our membership to grow an amazing 36% in 2012, and giving us a stronger voice in our efforts to protect and restore the Strait of Georgia for all the creatures who call it home. There is indeed strength in numbers!
