From the Helm with Kit Crowe
All boats need to be winterized for the long cold winters we endure here in the Okanagan Valley. There are a few different types of winterizing for each individual style of boat.
The basic Fog & Drain consists of disconnecting the batteries, draining the engine block and manifolds of all water, and running a fogging oil through the cylinders to lubricate them to sit over the winter. Ballasts, heaters and water systems are additional items that need to be drained and winterized.
A full winterize will include the Fog & Drain with an oil change included, check transmission fluids, check the impeller, run antifreeze through the ballast system and heater or any other water system your boat might have.
Storage is another consideration, whether you go heated inside storage or outdoor storage with shrink wrap or covers. Never store your boat without a winterization even if you're in a heated garage or storage area, as we have seen lots of cracked blocks happen through a power outage on really cold winter days.
Summerizing your boat includes hooking up all hoses, installing drain plugs, charging batteries and running the engine up to check that all systems are working properly.
