Tropic Island Resort
Words by Steve Fennell
Port Aransas on Mustang Island is a classic snowbird destination located along the Texas Gulf Coast. With a quaint, quiet atmosphere perfect for the 55+ plus crowd, The Tropic Island Resort RV Park and Hotel draws Canadian snowbirds every year for its outdoor recreation, local natural attractions, and active, friendly RV community.
Its 115 full-service sites adjoin modern ‘beach-inspired’ hotel rooms, cottages, and bungalows, which provide a variety of ways to experience the resort. Lounge under an enclosed pavilion, soak up the sun along the pool and enjoy the comforts of an RV site or a shaded patio of a vacation rental.
For RVers, sites are in either the resort’s south or north campus, all are pet-friendly and have grass lawns with level concrete pads and 50-, 30-, 20- and 15-amp power. Should you opt for a vacation rental, the standard king/queen hotel rooms, two-bedroom suites, cottages, and bungalows are bright and spacious with modern interiors and appointments. They are another great way to spend the winter here.
But whether you reserve an RV site or vacation rental, all guests can access the several facilities such as the heated inground saltwater pool, hot tubs, event centre/recreation area (located on both campuses), seasonal storage spaces, golf cart rentals, and participate in the resort’s social events. Among the many scheduled, expect to experience:
- Monday bingo and quilting classes
- Tuesday and Thursday aqua aerobics and poker night
- Wednesday ladies' luncheon and Margarita meet up
- Friday chair yoga
- Saturday ice cream socials
There are also exclusive themed events in Port Aransas that are real crowd-pleasers. They include the unique Belt Sander Races at the local Gaff restaurant, Port Aransas Restaurant Week, and the Port Aransas Art Center Sip & Shop.

Discover Mustang Island
Port Aransas is on a barrier island with Corpus Christi Bay to the west and The Gulf of Mexico to the east. Its geographical location means there are several ways to experience the waterways.
With a variety of beaches, Port Aransas Beach spans approximately 10 km (6 mi) and is close to dining and shopping options. Luby, Whitecap, and Natural beaches are other choices near the resort.
Day trips to nearby Mustang Island State Park are also a worthwhile visit, any time. At 8 km (5 mi), its expansive sand shores provide easy access to the water; it’s also pet-friendly and where you can view a variety of species of birds, go for long strolls and spend a morning or afternoon surf casting. The fishing here is excellent.
The Mustang State Island Paddle Park Trail will be a hit among serious kayakers. It consists of the 14 km (8.5 mi) North Trail, the 8 km (5.2 mi) Shamrock Loop Trail as well as the 11 km (6.8 mi) Ashum Trail. All lead along its western shoreline in Corpus Christi Bay and where you can take on some of the best shallow-water fishing in Texas.
There are even more attractions off the water. Dining and shopping opportunities abound while you’ll want to visit the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture, The Texas State Aquarium, and the U.S.S. Lexington Museum.
With no shortage of attractions, it’s easy to find new interests to further complement your stay. The Tropic Island Resort RV Park and Hotel is an ideal home-away-from-home for the winter and will provide a gateway to new experiences.
