THE TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF CAMPGROUND OWNERS PRESENTS ITS BEST ACCOMMODATIONS AWARD TO BAREFOOT BAY MARINA AND RESORT
When Don Talley acquired Barefoot Bay Marina and Resort four years ago, it was a nice campground with nearly six miles of shoreline along Lake Bob Sandlin.
But after investing nearly $1.5 million in improvements, Talley has taken the campground from good to great and won statewide recognition from the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO) for having the best accommodations in the Lone Star State.
“We are very pleased to receive this recognition,” Talley said, noting that he recently remodeled all six of the park’s cabins as well as a four-bedroom brick lakehouse, which comfortably sleeps nine adults.
But while the improvements to his rental units helped him win TACO’s Best Accommodations Award, they also helped him significantly increase his occupancy levels at the resort.
“The cabins are now full about 90 percent of the time,” Talley said, adding the units as well as the lakehouse are available on weekends, by the week or by the month. All of the rental units are fully furnished and include DirecTV.
In addition to remodeling Bayfoot Bay Marina’s cabins and lakehouse, Talley has expanded the park from 25 to 80 sites; expanded the park’s nature trail, which provides viewing opportunities for 50 different varieties of birds; and and built a new sports bar that overlooks the lake.
All of these improvements have significantly increased Barefoot Bay Marina’s appeal, not just for people wanting to rent the cabins or lakefront house, but to camp at the resort in a tent or RV. The resort also has a 40-slip marina and a convenience store that sells bait and tackle as well as RV supplies.
“When we first got it, I think we had two campers there. Now, we probably have 70,” Talley said, adding, “The majority of our weekenders come from a 100-mile radius.”
