Tabor City Jellystone Park
Tabor City Jellystone Park develops new activities to entice winter visitors who are traveling without kids.
Adult oriented activities will take place following a series of pre-Halloween themed weekends from Oct. 3 to Nov. 2
At Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts across the Northern U.S., Yogi Bear, Boo Boo and Cindy Bear typically hibernate for the winter sometime in November.
“This year we will make a nighttime event out of it over Thanksgiving weekend,” said Rebecca Murphy, assistant manager of the Tabor City Jellystone Park. “We hope to have all of our guests get into their pajamas and we plan to take them on ‘hey’ rides to put Yogi, Boo Boo and Cindy Bear to sleep in a yurt. Then we have milk and cookies so all the parents can put their kids to bed.”
But while Yogi, Boo Boo and Cindy Bear will hibernate for the winter at Tabor City Jellystone Park, the 170-site campground will not shut down. Instead, the park provides different kinds of activities designed to appeal to retirees and other winter visitors who are traveling without kids.
“Our winter activities include crafting and knitting classes as well as bingo games and potlucks,” Murphy said, adding, “We are developing golf outings and well as museum and art gallery tours for our winter visitors. Additional winter activities will include senior fitness classes, horseshoes, bag toss, ladies lunch outings, trivia games and holiday socials.”
In the meantime, however, Tabor City Jellystone Park will continue its focus on children and families with family-oriented activities, including five consecutive pre-Halloween-themed weekends with campsite decorating, costume competitions, and trick or treating. “Our biggest draw for Halloween weekends is our haunted house, which we call ‘The Screamery.’ It changes each year and is open to both our campers and the public.”
The park’s first Halloween-themed weekend, which takes place Oct. 3 - 5, coincides with the park’s “Turn it Pink” Weekend, which is designed to raise breast cancer awareness. A pink firetruck named Kayla will visit the park and t-shirts will be sold to support breast cancer research.
In addition to having campsites and cabins, Tabor City Jellystone Park features mini golf, a jumping pillow, a swimming pool and inflatable waterslide, catch and release fishing, playgrounds, a ball field and various games, including volleyball and basketball.
