Features riverfront campsites with private beaches, along the Kings River, just east of Kingsburg
Weary RVers heading up Highway 99 toward Yosemite or Sequoia from Southern California sometimes pull into noisy roadside rests in a futile attempt to catch a little sleep. But there’s a much better option: Club Royal Oak, a quiet riverfront RV resort along the Kings River, roughly 3.5 miles east of Highway 99, just east of the tiny Swedish-themed town of Kingsburg.
Club Royal Oak has 100 campsites, including 36 riverfront campsites with their own private beaches. The 30-acre park also has some of the largest campsites in California, ranging from 3,000 to 12,000 square feet, and most campsites are shaded by 50- and 60-year old ash and willow trees.
“There are five and six generations of families that have come to this campground since it was built 50 years ago, but most camping enthusiasts have no idea we’re here,” said Alan Degenhardt, whose family-owned company purchased the park in 2012. He previously operated the resort since 2005 for other companies.
The 2017 edition of the Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Campground Directory will list Club Royal Oak as the highest rated riverfront RV resort of its type in the West. Club Royal Oak earned a 9-9-9 rating for its facilities, cleanliness and amenities, which include restrooms with granite countertops and limestone tile showers, Degenhardt said, adding that construction crews are working at the park this month to install septic service to 50 additional campsites, adding to the existing 35 full hook-up sites and complementing the 30/50-amp electrical connections that were installed in 2009.
Other recent improvements include the installation of enough solar panels to satisfy 95 percent of the park’s power needs, even during the middle of summer. As a result of these and other improvements, Degenhardt said he and his family have transformed the quiet riverfront campground into a luxury RV resort.
“These investments in improvements help us to attract more business,” Degenhardt said, adding that the park is a popular base camp for camping enthusiasts heading into the Sierra as well as snowbirds who spend the winter months at the park.
Club Royal Oak has also generated a following with its annual flat bottom boat race event, called the Flat Bottom Boogie, which it has been hosting along a section of the Kings River since 2012. The next Flat Bottom Boogie at Club Royal Oak is scheduled for July 13-16, 2017.
