A Bit of Culture
Hemet has long been a center for history and culture in Riverside County. The ripples of The City’s cultural influences could be felt as early as 1923, with the opening performance of Ramona. Today entering the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre for a performance of the play is like taking a journey back through time.
The natural landscape of the Ramona Bowl remains almost as it was during that first performance. The romance and the tragedy of Ramona & Alessandro transfixes the crowd as they watch it unfold, offering a glimpse, though fictional, of the history of southern California.
The play's final performance of opening season in 1923 drew a crowd of nearly 2,000 and since then Ramona has been performed annually at the Ramona Bowl with only brief interruptions during the Depression (1933) and World War II (1942). It is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and was named the Official Outdoor Play of the State of California in 1993.
This year’s Ramona performances are scheduled for April 16th, 17th and 30th, and May 1st and 7th.
A Lot of Fun
Great fish stories are in the making at Diamond Valley Reserve Lake. Sure to be a hit with casual fishermen as well as serious anglers, Diamond Valley Lake is bi-weekly stocked with 2,000 lbs of rainbow trout during the fishing season. Miles of beautiful desert hiking trails follow the lake shore and offer an opportunity to enjoy the area’s unique wildflowers.
Close to Palm Springs, Hemet shares the friendly desert climate that makes for great year round golf. The area offers some truly stunning courses like Diamond Valley Golf Club. Hemet Valley’s 30 + golf courses range from 9 to 18 holes with varying levels of difficulty.
