Since the outbreak of Covid-19, Southern British Columbia and Vancouver Island have become prime destinations for Canadian snowbirds. Even though most restrictions have been lifted and the U.S./Canada border is seeing a steady flow of southbound traffic, the region remains popular among RVers come late fall - whether they stay in the area for a week before driving south or spend the entire season through to the spring.
According to Kim Van Dyk, general manager of Burnaby Cariboo RV Park and Campground (BCRV) located just outside of Vancouver, site reservations are already being placed for September and October, even through December and January.
A departure from other RV parks that permit decks, sheds, or other structures to be built for seasonal stays, BCRV is a traditional campground in the sense that it serves transient RVers who are passing through as well as snowbirds who want to stay a few months. It’s especially appealing with its number of park amenities and easily accessible attractions, events, and more.
“We are now seeing high reservation numbers for late fall and early winter,” says Van Dyk. “Although we don’t offer a monthly rate, we still get RVers who stay through to April and continuously renew our two-week winter rates.”
Van Dyk explained that one of the common travel habits that also remains constant is reservations for a few days or a week among those who are either en route to a southern destination or returning home from one.
”We are very close to the U.S. (approximately 40 km (25 mi) away) and RVers commonly drive long stretches to the border so they want a rest and break from the road,” says Van Dyk. “They usually stay here for a couple of days to reorganize or to enjoy the area before moving on.”

BCRV Location, Features and Amenities
What’s also convenient about BCRV’s location is it’s easily accessible for all types of RVs by taking BC Hwy 1 and 7. Once settled in the park, guests can either take their tow vehicle or the convenient Millennium SkyTrain to see many attractions in Vancouver including Stanley Park, Vancouver Aquarium, Granville Island or the green spaces of Lynn Canyon and Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.
Most sights on the transit line are within 60 minutes (or 45 minutes by vehicle, traffic pending). Biking, hiking and walking trails are nearby as well and some of the popular Burnaby sights include Barnet Marine Park, Burnaby Village Museum, and Central Park.
Should visitors just prefer to relax at their site, the grounds of BCRV are impressive, which draw RVers and snowbirds season after season. Some of the popular amenities include:
- Secluded sites with tall privacy hedges that can fit a wide range of RV models and sizes.
- A 929 sq m (10,000 sq ft) clubhouse complete with a lounge area, heated indoor pool, fitness centre, hot tub, laundry facilities, an arcade and even an outdoor deck/patio.
- Shower facilities that can accommodate those with disabilities.
- An on-site Mini Mart, which sells essentials and select RV supplies.
- RV wash station (seasonal)
- Barbecue grills and a gazebo
At the time of this writing, Van Dyk explained that BCRV was in the process of installing new fibre optic WiFi to offer visitors increased bandwidth and seamless, reliable service for smart devices, laptops, and other remote systems. The park is expecting it to be complete and ready this fall.
RV park amenities play a large role in providing smooth travels for snowbirds and seasonal RVers. But it’s also the flexibility that offers even more convenience during short- or longer-term stays. With its clean and fully-functional facilities, BCRV is a prime location that continues to serve RVers throughout the year.
