Waking the Beast

The following procedures will give you a good idea on how to prepare your RV for a new travelling season
Thoroughly inspect the outside of the trailer, open all doors, vents, windows, and compartments. Check for any animal or insect intrusion, mostly mice or ants. Also check for water damage, or other deterioration. Inspect battery condition and levels – refill and recharge as necessary. Be sure cable ends and terminals are clean and free of corrosion.
Check tire condition and pressure -- re-inflate to specified cold pressure. Don’t forget the spare tire! Operate all 12-volt lights and accessories. Check the operation of taillights, turn signals, backup lights, clearance lights, license plate lights, etc.
If your water system has been winterized, drain anti-freeze from the water system. Check water pump filter and/or water purification cartridge, if equipped. Turn on water pump and open all faucets until the flow of antifreeze stops. Open water heater by-pass, if your unit has one. Flush out the fresh water system, operating all faucets and fixtures in the system, including exterior shower, until the water runs clear. Check all joints and fittings for leaks. Drain all holding tanks. Your fresh water system is now ready for use.
Inspect the sewage drain hose for holes or possible leaks, replace if necessary.
Remove LP regulator cover, checking for damage. Inspect all pipes and fittings in the LP system. Check overall condition of propane tanks, making sure their paint is okay. Operate each LP gas appliance. Observe all burner and pilot flames for proper color and size
Install a new battery in the smoke detector, check gas detector and Co2 detector operations, if your unit is equipped with them. Inspect all of the 120-volt electrical system components -- power cord, converter, and outlets. Operate all 120-volt appliances, and the air conditioner unit. Carefully check the sealants around all roof and body seams and windows. Reseal if necessary. Lubricate all exterior locks, hinges, and latches.
Run a thorough operational check of braking system, be certain to test the vehicles emergency brake-away switch. If equipped, extend and retract the slide- out room(s), and visually ensure the room seals are not sticking and are sealing properly; lubricate all seals as required. Finally, wash the exterior, inspecting the body for scratches or other damage.
Your RV is now ready for the road!
